The simplest email audit no one’s doing
Subscribing to your own list with a fresh email address is the easiest, most effective way to audit and fix your customer journey firsthand.
Want to know the fastest way to improve your email performance?
Subscribe to your own list.
Yes, really. If that sounds too simple, or like something you’ll get to later, this is exactly for you.
Whether you're a copywriter, a CMO, an ESP product manager, or a solo creator, you should be experiencing your own emails like a real person.
Why this matters
Most onboarding sequences and welcome emails are set up once and then left untouched while your business evolves. Offers shift. Voice sharpens. Priorities change. But those first-touch emails? They’re still doing the talking.
And they might be saying the wrong thing.
I originally published this idea in my own email newsletter. Later that day, I opted in to a small business community list.
Here’s what happened:
- The form's success message had dark gray text on a black background. I had to break out the highlighter to read it.
- I then got a generic confirmation email from Kit asking me to click to confirm my subscription.
- After clicking, I received a follow-up email thanking me for applying to their community (huh?). The punchline? “We’ll reopen enrollment on September 6, 2022.”
Last I checked, it was May 2025.
This means you
- Email copywriters: Subscribe to your client’s list. See what actually goes out and whether it’s helping or hurting your work.
- Marketing teams: Use a burner email. Go through the motions. Then do it again on mobile.
- ESP product teams: Sign up as a new user. See the flows you're asking others to trust.
- Nonprofits: Donate $5 and check the full journey: confirmation, receipt, and follow-up.
- Ecommerce: Sign up for your 10% welcome coupon. Use it. What happens next?
Dashboards lie. Inboxes don’t.
Your ESP shows you logic trees, rules, and sequences. But the actual experience? That lives in the inbox.
Broken tags, duplicate sequences, outdated copy, expired offers—they’re all unnoticed until you see what your subscribers see. If your first impression is off, everything downstream will be too.
This isn’t just about catching a typo or broken link. It’s about alignment.
If your brand, your offer, and your onboarding aren’t speaking the same language, you’re leaking trust, conversions, and attention.
What to do this week
- Use a new email address (or alias) to sign up for your own list.
- Open every email. Click the links. View them on desktop and mobile.
- Read them like a stranger. Are they accurate? Are they compelling? Are they you?
You don’t need a fancy tool to audit your emails. You just need a new email address and the curiosity to click.
If you haven’t done it lately, do it now. Your emails are making your first impressions whether you’re watching or not.
